The Perfect Housewarming Gifts

There comes a moment every September when décor stores have flipped over to all-things-pumpkin. I begin craving the comforts of a cozy home. This is also the season of new homeownership, as those who tackled spring or summer moves have had a chance to settle in and make the home their own. Fall is the perfect season to celebrate friendship and the comforts of home by blessing a new homeowner with a thoughtful housewarming gift. Even if you don’t have an occasion this season to welcome a friend into a new home, consider gifting someone you care about with a special something that will remind them of the spirit of the season.

Bake and Bring a Bumbleberry Galette

Gifting friends and neighbors with a baked good to warm their home is an age-old tradition that never fails as a thoughtful gesture. My favorite is a galette as the end-of-summer fruit and flaky pie crust transition nicely between summer and fall. I read an article once about the magical term “bumbleberry,” which describes any amalgamation of berries. I’ve adopted this homey word for my blueberry and raspberry galette recipe that would be perfect served with vanilla ice cream.

To make, you’ll need the following:

  • 9-inch pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
  • Two small packages of fresh berries
  • Course sugar
  • Lemon juice
  • Vanilla extract.

Combine the berries with a few spoonfuls of sugar and about a teaspoon each of lemon juice and vanilla extract. Roll out the pie crust on a parchment- or silicone-lined cookie sheet and spoon the berries in the center of the crust, straining out as much juice as possible. Fold the pie crust about two inches over the berry center and brush the top of the crust with melted butter. Sprinkle course sugar on top of the crust and bake until golden brown and bubbly (about 30 minutes) at 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Bring to your friends in a shallow, travel-friendly container wrapped with a ribbon.

Arrange a Fall Planter

The mums are out at my local grocery and home improvement stores in all their fall-hued splendor. Mums are a hardy flower that look beautiful in a planter for your friend’s new front porch or stoop. Consider picking up a large pot with good drainage alongside some potting soil. Mix in fall florals with decorative kale or some coral bells. Baby kale is pretty in purple and looks beautiful next to marigolds. Also feel free to visit your local store and ask what the sales associates would suggest.

Commission a Custom Home Portrait

Friends of mine recently purchased their first home, so I painted a custom portrait of their home in watercolor to commemorate this special event. A housewarming gift that uniquely captures your friends’ new home is something they will treasure for generations. I won’t forget the joy they expressed when they told me they had hung the painting near their bedroom and that it’s now one of their most prized possessions.

I would love to paint a custom home portrait for you or a friend. Send me a message @jordanlisettewrites on Instagram if you’re interested!

This poem by nineteenth-century American poet Helen Hunt Jackson perfectly sums up my sentiments about the beautiful month of September:

 “By all these lovely tokens
September days are here,
With summer’s best of weather
And autumn’s best of cheer.”

Bring a friend this season’s best of cheer with a thoughtful something to warm their home.

Happy gifting,
