Although we love cake tastings, dress fittings and picking out invitations, wedding planning is more than just flowers and venues – it’s a process that will lead you to finally saying “I Do” to the person of your dreams. You may be leading wedding planning, but when it comes to deciding on a honeymoon it’s a two person decision.
Are you two explorers who are ready to climb mountains and experience a new culture? Or are you ready for a relaxing week away where you can lounge by the beach for hours on end? Whatever your personality may be, we’re sharing some of our favorite destinations based on a couple’s personality!
Warning: This may be the only time work won’t question how long you’ll be gone so we vote for maximizing your time and taking a 10-14 day honeymoon if you can swing it!
For the Explorer | Queenstown, New Zealand
If you and your official other half are looking for the next great adventure, then Queenstown is your perfect destination! Named on of the best spots for adventure lovers, this charming town has everything from an incredible lake, to mountain views, to a plethora of activities you can choose from. Not to mention a killer food scene!
If you’re looking for a great postcard picture to send back to loved ones we recommend hiking Bob’s Peak or boating Lake Wakatipu. The views will have family members “oohh” – ing and you’ll get a great holiday card out of it.
Looking for a less traditional route while abroad? Try skydiving, jet boats or skiing! If you’re interested in traveling by car for a day, we recommend driving up the coast and enjoying the sunset on a nearby beach.
All this adventure has us working up an appetite! Luckily, Queenstown offers up some wonderful food options in a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere.
For the Beach Bum | Bora Bora
This is truly the most romantic island in the world. From the gorgeous scenery to the private bungalows on the beach, everything about this island screams romance. From sunrise to sunset, you’ll be able to relax and rejuvenate after saying “I Do.” Spend a day in the spa or out in the ocean, there’s plenty to do on this tropical island. You’ll have more than the newlywed glow by the time you return along with breathtaking photos to share with friends and family!
For the On-the-Move Gal | Europe Like a Local
Are you wanting to use your honeymoon to check off some bucket list finds in Europe? We love Europe any time of the year and recommend staying local and steering clear from all tourist traps! While the sights and sounds of London, Paris, Rome and Madrid already have us packing our bags, trying trading in your five-star hotel for an AirBnB. Stay in smaller, less known towns along the way and experience all that the historic cities have to offer.
One of our favorite finds abroad has to be Florence, Italy. Off the beaten path from the hustle and bustle of Rome and the overly romantic Venice, Florence combines modern day with a blast from the past. Walk around the cobblestone streets at night, spend the day wondering museums and seeing the Statue of David or taking a pizza-making class and fill up on Limoncello. Florence is our first pick for Italian cities if you’re looking to immerse yourself in culture.
For the Adventurer | African Safari
For those wanting a wild and adventurous honeymoon, fasten your seat belts and travel to Shamwari, South Africa! Voted the world’s best Safari Reserve, Shamwari offers up excitement that you can’t find anywhere else.
Need a little more convincing to travel to Africa for your honeymoon? South Africa boosts a year-round climate and holds hidden treasures in and around the cities. Most couples choose to start (or end) their visit in Cape Town.
Cape Town has made plenty of ‘Top 5’ lists because of its iconic and vibrant feels that will leave guests wanting to come back. In addition, Table Mountain and Robben Island are two landmark staples of the city – not to mention Cape Town has a wonderful selection of up-to-the-minute bars and restaurants.
Soak up the beautiful landscapes or travel a little further to Cape Peninsula where you can explore little fishing villages and spectacular wine lands.
For the Culturally Astute | Thailand
Travel on an unforgettable journey and take in a new culture while celebrating your new life together in Thailand! Visit vibrant cities, world renowned resorts or stunning tropical islands and secluded beaches. Combine the experience of luxurious hideaways infused with exotic culture that never fails to charm especially if you choose to forgo the hotel and stay with a local family!
Some of our recommended destinations include Phuket, Koh Samui or Krabi. Each location offers glistening temples, beautiful beaches, buzzing cities or quaint villages. Where Phuket offers an opportunity to sail on sparking lagoons, Krab offers up striking limestone cliffs to rock climb. Not to mention Koh Samui’s jungle with a sky canopy and the chance to ride an elephant!
