3 Tips to Manage Chronic Illness

A very significant number of people — more than you might have guessed — struggle with any number of chronic health conditions throughout their lives. These can be the kinds of things which all casual observers can notice, or they can be the kind of “hidden” conditions that people bear in silence.

While many of these conditions are ultimately incurable in light of our current medical understanding, and while others require management through medication, lifestyle factors can nonetheless play a major role in the severity of these conditions. Get all of your ducks properly lined up, and it’s even possible to cure yourself of many such conditions without medical intervention.

Eat the things that make you feel good

Keep in mind that the instruction here is to eat things that “make you feel good”, not to “eat whatever you have a vague impulse for at any moment of the day.”

You should, in other words, focus on whole, natural, and “real” foods, and avoid things like abundant helpings of ice cream, chocolate, and pizza.

Your key guiding principle, however, should be that the food you eat should make you feel good. You should feel nourished and well-sated after each meal. You should feel calm, positive, and energised as a general outcome of your dietary choices.

Research dating back to WW2 has shown that prolonged periods of inadequate caloric intake has a ruinous impact on your health, and if the foods you eat consistently make you feel terrible, that’s likely a warning from your body that you should cut back on them and try something else.

It’s been suggested that a large number of people struggle with undiagnosed celiac disease, never realising that this one dietary component may be the root cause of many of the stressful autoimmune symptoms they experience.

Avoid food paranoia, but pay attention to your body and how certain meals make you feel on a consistent basis.

Sleep as much as you need

Why We Sleep”, a book by Matthew Walker, is currently attracting rave reviews around the world, and it’s easy to see why. In the book, the author points out the science behind why adequate, high-quality sleep is a non-negotiable part of overall health and well-being.

Research has shown that even a week of moderate sleep deprivation wrecks blood sugar control, damages cognitive function severely, harms immune function, and ruins mood.

Stop burning the candle at both ends. Get your beauty sleep, instead.

Spend some time each day doing low-intensity physical exercise

A lot of attention of typically given to High-Intensity Interval Training and other forms of extreme exercise, these days.

While these workouts may be effective, however, they are also very hard on the body, and especially if you’ve been struggling with chronic health issues, you should strongly consider cutting back.

Instead, increase the amount of low-intensity physical exercise you get, such as walking. Walking — especially in beautiful surroundings — has a very therapeutic effect on the body, and contributes more than you might think to cardiovascular health, without straining the central nervous system or throwing the body into a downward spiral of eternally elevated stress hormones.
